"From the perspective of a 10-year old girl, I remember my grandmother as
a rather stern woman. She wore old-fashioned black shoes, glasses and a tight
perm in her hair. She presided over the activities at the long-time family
home at 101-37 121 Street, Richmond Hill, NY. Our family frequently visited
her and Aunt Jeanne on Sundays and at Christmas time. When Grandmother died,
August 4, 1961, we were on our family vacation, and had to return immediately
for her funeral. August 6 was my 10th birthday, and I'm sorry to say, that I
felt a bit cheated since I didn't have a birthday celebration! Grandmother Whiteford's
funeral was the first of many that I would attend over the next 7 years.
