Whitefords in the American Civil War

Following recent contact with Mary Whiteford who is looking for info on Samuel Whiteford of the 36th New York Volunteers, I thought it would be a good idea to publish what info there is on all Whitefords in the Civil War, ultimately I'll put together pages on military service worldwide..
It's worth a quick note on how recruitment in the Civil War worked, in the North at the outbreak of the war a flood of patriotism lead to the establishment of a large number of '3-month Regiments', everyone though the war would be over quickly, after the defeat at Bull Run the Union called for 2 & 3 year volunteers. Later in the War when volunteers began to run dry consription (drafts) were introduced calling on service for the duration of the war. Early Volunteers ofter re-enlisted after their initial service was completed. giving them higher rank & priviledges in their new units, see Hiram Whiteford as an example.
In the South volunteers generally signed on for the duration of the war from outset, pre-war militia units were incorporated en-mass into line regiments. Later as the war took it's toll the Confederacy also introduced conscription. As can be imagined Confederate records are more scatted than those for the North.
Both sides had problems with 'Draft Dodgers' and 'Bounty Jumpers', men who would accept a bounty for joining a unit and then skip town with the money. One wonders if James Whiteford of the 27th New Jersey was such a person...
