John Whiteford

Born about 1951, John played for Airdrie in the late Sixties and was sometimes in same line-up as Derek Whiteford, his cousin, the following are extracts from match programs of the period:

'Another local family made it's unique mark on Scottish football last Saturday. While 17-year-old John Whiteford was scoring his first goal for Airdrie's big team at Falkirk, brother David was notching the winner for Motherwell against Hamilton. And not to be outdone, Airdrie left-half Derek Whiteford, a cousin, had the dubious honour of being booked at Brockville.'
Airdrieonians v Hearts - Saturday, 21st September 1968

Note: This extract seems to contradict a similar extracts found elsewhere in the Airdrie programs that indicate that David was Derek's Brother not John's.

'With Davie Marshall and Billy McPheat back in the team at Easter Road last Saturday, the problems besetting Airdrie seemed to ease a little. But both players showed the effects of their injuries and will need a few games to tune up again. Meanwhile hopes are high that outside- left John Phillips will soon be back in action after his cartilage operation, and young John Whiteford is quickly recuperating from a painful leg knock sustained in the Lanarkshire Cup match against Albion Rovers.'
Airdrieonians v Morton - Saturday, 12th October 1968

'Another Broomfield youngster -John Whiteford- has been at the National Recreation Centre at Largs this week, with the Scottish Youth team prospects for 1969. '
Airdrieonians v St. Johnstone - Saturday, 16th November 1968

Played for Falkirk in the 1975-76 season where he set a club record for the number of goals scored in a single season, this record still stands today. Often played in same team as David Whiteford.
